Life in New Zealand

For action, New Zealand is the number one destination in the world. New Zealand invented bungee jumping and its people have a wonderfully adventurous spirit. Go jetboating or brave white water rafting. Explore the live geysers of Rotorua or the North Island's Waitomo Caves, famous for its limestone caverns and glow worms. Visit Auckland's picturesque harbors and see why it's called the "City of Sails".

A varied and Friendly Nation

New Zealand was first settled by the Polynesians in 950 AD, and Europeans began settling there in the mid-1800s. Today's New Zealand is a blend of Maori, Polynesian, Asian and Pakeha (European) cultures. New Zealanders, or Kiwis, are known for their friendly, easy-going nature, love of adventure, "ingenuity" and "can-do" attitude!

Kiwi Hospitality

You may find yourself living with a host family near the capital city of Wellington, known for its cultural festivals, artsy Dunedin, Christchurch near the Southern Alps or in the picturesque countryside. Bask on the warm, sun-drenched beaches or trek with your family through the cool depths of New Zealand’s native forests. If Maori friends invite you home for kai-moana (food), you may experience the wonderful Hangi which is a meal cooked underground with hot rocks. Then again, you may be asked to a friend's place for tea – this is actually dinner! Make sure to leave room for dessert – New Zealand’s famous hokey pokey ice cream!
